Dentyne Terrar-oke Competition
On the last week of the remainings of May, I was blog hopping and there was this particular post that caught my eye. It was a singing competition held by Dentyne and I was a week away from the closing deadline. This was what I was supposed to do, record myself singing an acapella and send it over to them.
On the first week of June, I received a phone call from them and they told me that I was in top 70. Excited and nervous at the same time, I rang up my good ol girlfriend and told her "I NEED HELP! Dentyne wants me to change the lyrics to a song to convince the judges why they should pick me!"
Went for Gold Chillis that night for the awesome Subang's butter chicken and I drove us back to her place where we sat in the tiny room, searching for signs of inspiration for my song. I chose Candy Man by Christina Aguirela because I love the version The Decimal Band made! It was hip and funky. We finished it after 3 hours of googling and searching for words that rhymes. It was the perfect lyrics for a perfectly hip song!
As usual, the next move was to find for a guitarist, who else non other than the band itself. I had Justin Mah for the weekend! The second guitarist for The Decimal Band and we worked from 1pm to 4pm on that Sunday in my living room for a master piece that me and Kah Mun wrote on a Thursday night.
That was a pretty hectic week for me because my sister was getting married on that particular Saturday. I had to be there for her from Thursday night up to Sunday morning. (1-2am) and I rushed back to KL on Sunday morning to meet up with Justin for our recording session. The dateline was at 5pm and thrust me, with the hot weather during our first collaboration, we did not do as good as we would love to. Nevertheless, I still submitted our recording and waited patiently for a phone call to tell if I made it through for the TOP 5.
Here's the prizes.
Top 5 - IPhone4 and RM300 calling card.
Consolation for other 100 singers- RM100 calling card.
If you were chosen to be in TOP 5, You will need to go through weekly challenges for 4 weeks and the marks will from the judges (Adflin Shauki and Juliana Evans) and through public voting. (50% judges + 50% public votes = 100 %)
Every week, Dentyne Malaysia will post your video in their Facebook page and the votes begin from Monday 12pm to Friday 12pm. This goes on for 4 weeks. (4 weekly challenges = 40% judges + 40 % public voting) and the last challenge will be a live performance in The Curve. (10 % judges + 10% on ground votes)
I was thrilled when I read the terms and conditions to be a part of the Final 5. I've always wanted an Iphone (thanks to CV's Doodle) and this is one of the many rare occasions where I was willing to step out of my comfort zone to do something I think I'm talented in. A voice.
Luck was on my side when I received a phone call from Dentyne on a Tuesday during my Advanced Statistics class. I ran out of my lecture class and screamed when they told me I made it to TOP 5.
First thought that came into my mind. Tell daddy!!!
After that, tell the boyffie! Then, text sister! =D
It was fun, oh believe me. =)
The first week itself was a torture. i spend my Monday and Tuesday at Adrian Mak's place trying to get the singing going and the recording right.
I had to record 3 videos every week.
A profile video about myself.
A performance song.
A challenge song.
IT WAS TOUGH and I skipped most of my Monday and Tuesday classes to get it done. I HATE last minute work. So I usually would want to finish my videos by Tuesday night and submit it on that night itself (closing time was every Wednesday, 12pm).
It was a very tiring job for me and after a while, my passion just disappears. It was not about the singing anymore, it was about finishing it so that I can attend my classes again.
Wednesdays are usually my "HOLIDAY" day. My mind would be Dentyne-free and from Thursday onwards, it'll be the start of my I-WANNA-DIE day again.
It was tough having to juggle my time between my studies (7 subjects), a boyfriend who was about the leave the country to further his studies in Melbourne and sometime for myself.
I was constantly sad or I'll get demotivated easily. I give up and I turn my stress to tears. Kah Mun and Vanessa was my pillar of strength and they feed me with comments on why I should continue doing this.
Come on MeiLin, don't be a baby! =P
Well, congratulations MeiLin, you've got third place! =D
That's RM3 000 to fund your trip to Melbourne next year.
First prize winner received RM15 000 and also a singing deal with Adflin Shauki.
"WOW' <- that was the first thing that came into my mind. 2 minutes later.
"THANK GOD" <- why? =P
Well, I will NOT LET MYSELF COMMIT INTO SOMETHING that I'm not ready for. How do I know that?
If I wanted this as much as the other contestants, I would be gladly doing my videos every week and will not have BREAK DOWNS and the thought of quitting will not occur in my mind. It did. Many times in fact.
I know I can sing but I'm not ready or driven like how the other contestants are. They know they can sing and they like doing what they are doing.
I like singing too but if I were to do it everyday, I'd be bored to death and I will just QUIT. Plus, I'm just 20 and I've not graduated yet. I don't want to fall into an industry where I know the chance of me succeeding in it is only 50%. Where and what do I fall onto after that?
I realized then I actually grew up and learned what I want out of this competition. It was just a temporary fad I had in mind. Any chance of pursuing this as a career for now? 1%. LOL.
Want to be a graduate? 99%
BUT, if I was given an offer for a part-time commitment that would take 30% of my time out of that 100% of me wanting to be a graduate student, I'll do it.
=)
Let's see where the end of the Dentyne Terrar-oke competition will lead to me the beginning of something new.
Here's my videos!
